Origin Of The Name Yuba CityYuba City is a historic location named for the wild grapes seen growing riverside by Spanish and Mexican scouting parties in the early 1700s. It is believed that Yuba is based on the word “uba”, an alternate spelling of “uva,” the Spanish word for grape. The native Maidu people had been the only settlers in the area when it was first discovered. It was quickly taken over by the Mexican government, who later granted much the area to John Sutter, who hoped to develop of commercial center which would cater to the needs of the gold miners flocking upstream by the thousands to make their fortune in the gold fields. Establishing a City of Yuba CityBy 1852 Yuba city had become a steamboat landing with a hotel, a post office, a grocery store, and approximately 20 homes with a combine population of about 150 people. After World War II, Yuda City saw a massive influx of new citizens, expanding the residential areas of the city far to the west and south. Orchards gave way to residential areas as they were stripped away to make room for the new houses required to accommodate the sizable migration. It eventually grew into a small but dignified city which, at the time of writing, houses a population of 65,773 Business In Yuba City:As the fourth biggest producer of rice in the world, a good deal of local workers are a part of the city’s bustling rice industry. But, more than that, Yuba City houses the company headquarters of the largest dried fruit processing plant in the world, Sunsweet Growers Incorporated. Due to the small size of the city, retail and health care services comprise the largest sectors of the economy, with the number 1 employer being the Fremont-Rideout Health group, which employes 1,855 workers in the area. Locksmith Yuba City The First CataclysmsAs with any city, Yuba eventually found itself subject to a great tragedy, in this case the flood of December 1955. It was at this time that the skies opened up and bathed much of northern California in a deluge of torrential rain. The heavy rains filled the rivers to the brim, overflowing the banks and punching through the levees in a twisted Christmas Eve gift perfectly timed to the mot holy of holidays. 38 lives were taken by the rushing waters and the downtown are was decimated by the flooding. It was only the quick actions of the Yuba County airport that kept the death toll from going any higher, rescuing between 550 and 600 Sutter County residents from the deathly waters.
The next horror came 6 years later, on March 14, 1961, in the middle of the Cold War, when America was experimenting with fantastical new death machines with which to ward off the much-feared red menace. On that day a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress loaded with nuclear weapons encountered a pressurization issue near Yuba City. As a result the aircraft was lowered to balance out, but in doing so more fuel than anticipated was expended and the engines quickly ran dry. Before it had a chance to meet with a tanker aircraft the plane crashed into the city. The plane was thankfull empty, as the crew had evacuated the plane at 10,000 feet and the pilot had followed suit at 4,000 feet in order to steer the plane to a less populated area. The craft was destroyed on impact, as were the weapons, two 3.8 megaton Mark 39 thermonuclear weapons. Seemingly by sheer luck, the bombs did not detonate despite being destroyed, and as a result there was no subsequent release of radioactive material. Local Culture and Beauteous Living ConditionsContrary to the imagery evoked by the word “city,” Yuba City is in fact a small, relatively quiet area with lots of wide open space and a good amount of forest land. It is a sleepy area perfect for someone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life without fully giving up the rewarding social aspect of crowded cities.
There are 21 parks to enjoy, a thriving public school system, a sprawling bike trail, and track and field facility. The city has a diverse population and houses several Sikh Temples and is in fact home to the Sikh Parade and the Punjabi Festival. The downtown is a lovely, upscale area full of restaurants, bars, boutiques, spas, and art galleries. The area is also host to a variety of street fairs and festivals, from farmers markets to pub crawls.
Conclusion
The loud noises and frenetic nature of the big city isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that those people just want to move to the suburbs. Plenty of people want to stay in the city and enjoy the kind of closeness that only an urban environment can offer.
